My favorite way to enjoy a big meal together is to have all the dishes ready on the table so everyone can take their pick. Which in essence, means side dishes are the order of the day! And, so much the better if they’re easy to make or can be made the day ahead before being transported. With any luck the following super-star list of sides won’t only save my holiday cooking, but yours too!

At any meal studded with sides, we all gravitate to what we like best: a few bites of cheese from a wintry cheese platter, for example, some toasted garlic bread, a few jumbo braised shrimp, maybe a bowl of slow-braised mushrooms or caponata... and at least one potato dish, like these hasselback potatoes with sun dried-tomato aioli.
