More and more people are turning to raw milk as a supposedly healthy alternative. But this trend comes with serious dangers, prompting consumer protection authorities to issue urgent warnings.
Food Hype with Health Risks
Whether in organic stores, at farmers' markets, on nutrition blogs, or social media – raw milk is being hyped as nutrient-rich and particularly natural. Fans rave about its more intense flavor and alleged health benefits. However, what many don't consider: because raw milk is not pasteurized, it can contain dangerous pathogens.
Raw Milk: A Natural Trend with Dangerous Germs
Raw milk is not heat-treated, allowing potentially harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, EHEC, or Listeria to survive. These pathogens can cause severe gastrointestinal infections and, in some cases, even be life-threatening. While some people may remain symptom-free, others can experience high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.
These Groups Are Particularly at Risk
Healthy adults often have a strong immune system, but for certain individuals, raw milk can be particularly dangerous. Infants, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe infections. EHEC bacteria are especially dangerous, as they can lead to kidney failure.
Experts Urge Caution
Despite the hype, health risks outweigh the potential benefits. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) strongly advises boiling raw milk before consumption or opting for pasteurized milk instead. What may seem like a natural indulgence can quickly turn into a serious health hazard.
