Artificial Smoke Flavors Banned In EU – More Harmful Than Previously Thought!
Which foods are affected and what consumers should look out for now
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has made the decision on banning the well loved smoke flavor in multiple food categories. This smoke aroma will gradually leave the food items on the shelves in a span of 5 years. This is mainly due to the unhealthy side effects of the artificial smoke flavor; including hereditary diseases, cancerogenic effects, and chronic illnesses. The components of concern to EFSA are called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), found in any (meat, chips, snacks, ham, etc.) food item that has “smoked” on the label.
There is more than one artificial smoke flavor
In total, there are 8 smoke flavor agents that give the food customers purchase the smoked effect. The exact scientific names of these agents are in the Q&A EFSA held. It is stated that at least 6 of these agents are of extreme health concern, but the signs are pointing at all 8 being just as harmful as the other one. Thanks to the careful research and necessary steps taken by the EFSA, all 8 are being banned. The timeline at the moment suggests that until July 1st 2026, some items can still be sold, except cheese, meat, and fish. These three latter categories can be sold until July 1st 2029 and can stay on the shelves until their expiry dates are done for.
How should consumers shop for smoke flavored food?
If the food is actually smoked, using real smoke and authentic smoking methods, it is on the safe side of the ban (smoked salmon, tofu etc.). The labels to watch out for include flavor labels like “smoking flavor” or “smoke flavor”. Some items are also smoke flavored as they are, like barbecue sauce, or smoked chips. The artificial flavor will be taken out of the equation for most of these products, leaving room for better alternatives. At the very least, this regulation is bound to bring a moderation in usage for smoked products. Since even the most naturally instilled smoke processes bring PAHs into the food you consume. The aiming is to have (natural) smoked choices every now and then as the best possible solution for smoke flavored goods, instead of using it in a wide variety of items frequently.
