Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and if you're planning a date, you can't avoid thinking about the dinner. It should be sensual, romantic, and spark that certain "something" – and also be something special, because St. Valentine (the namesake of the day) is only celebrated once a year.

Aphrodisiac Effect – Real or Imagined?

The mind immediately goes to exotic seafood: oysters, shrimp, scallops – all aphrodisiacs for libido, right? Julia Steinberg-Böthig from the Fisch Informationszentrum e.V. (FIZ) shared her thoughts on aphrodisiac seafood and the myths surrounding them just before Valentine's Day. She says that there are only a few studies that show a real connection between increased libido and the consumption of a particular food.

"The psychological effect should not be underestimated," says the nutritionist. "The ingredients certainly have an effect on both the body and mind – especially seafood like oysters." Additionally, there are indeed substances in selected ingredients that can promote blood circulation and hormone release. The often luxurious preparation methods also contribute to creating a sensual atmosphere.

Sensual Ingredients for Valentine's Day

You can combine these ingredients with the effects of seafood to create a truly "stimulating" dinner:

Chili: Capsaicin stimulates blood circulation and releases endorphins.
Avocado: Promotes blood flow and stimulates hormone balance.
Ginger: Stimulates circulation and gets the blood flowing.
Honey: Gently raises blood sugar levels and provides energy.
Pomegranate seeds: Rich in antioxidants that support blood circulation.
Chocolate: Contains serotonin and phenylethylamine, which trigger feelings of happiness.

The Stimulating Menu for Valentine's Day

Starter: Oysters with lemon or pomegranate vinaigrette.

Main Course: Pan-fried scallops with avocado cream and a light chili or ginger butter. Alternatively: Shrimp in honey-chili marinade, accompanied by fresh salad with pomegranate seeds.

Dessert: Dark chocolate mousse with a hint of chili or a delicate honey note – complemented by crunchy pomegranate seeds.
