The World Food Prize Foundation came forward with an open letter about the food crisis we are all heading towards. It is one crisis after the other in today’s world, and perhaps you would not be surprised to read that it is all somewhat connected. Climate conditions, natural disasters, drought, water supplies… all solid concerns for the future of food. The #WFPLaureates4Action, also known as more than 150 winners of the Nobel Prize and World Food Prize, are warning us about the events surrounding our food today in their open letter. Luckily there are ways you can already contribute for a more positive change.

Opportunity Crops are the future

Climate resilient crops or opportunity crops, are types of crops that are more sustainable than some of the traditional crops that we are used to. Stay connected on the subject by reading up on establishments that are following Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS), the vision is to have a future of adapting crops in line with the ever changing climate conditions of today. Some examples of these crops are pigeon peas, mung beans, and quinoa. The interesting news is they can also be localized very well. Look up on your best local produce, this doesn’t always have to be expensive!

Catch up on leftovers recipes, stay locally connected

Don't skip reading on recipes and food with the subject: How to make the best of my leftovers. For instance, if you'd like to be resourceful, thankfully such guides can lead you in the right way to use up everything in the pantry and fridge. If you never skip a “here’s how to use your leftovers" article this habit will surely become second nature. And you will end up with a positive contribution to your wallet, the environment, and your taste buds alike.

Flea markets, farmer’s markets, local food communities

In Germany, especially in Berlin, farmer’s markets are always great for best deals and the most delicious produce around. This is the time to tell everyone you know about all of it– no more gatekeeping your favorite spots. Let your favorite farmers, stands, and manufacturers benefit from your local micro economy. The more they earn, the better you will benefit, hence the environment!

Stay informed

Times are difficult, for politics, for climate, and now for food too. It’s no surprise these all follow each other. Staying connected to what’s happening around is the best way to keep up with the ever changing climates. When the next "opportunity crops” or “here’s how to use your leftovers “ articles/news show up on your feed, read up! Take the time, and subscribe to good sources and you won’t miss a beat.
