Springtime is without a doubt, asparagus time. It is well enjoyed by many, especially in Germany, during the season of rebirth. It is also well known that asparagus has many health benefits when consumed in accordance with a moderate diet. But are there any side effects to an excessive amount of asparagus in your daily diet?

Experts weigh in on the subject of “eating asparagus everyday” with potential side effects to keep in mind when consuming the spring favorite.

Benefits of asparagus as a start

Before the potential side effects, it is important to mention the outweighing benefits of asparagus for the body. Asparagus is rich in vitamins such as vitamins B6, C, E, A, and K, calcium, zinc, magnesium, protein, iron, folic acid, potassium, selenium, and a great amount for your dietary fiber! Not to mention that it is  basically mainly water, which is great for hydration through food.

What are the side effects of eating asparagus?

Watching out for one’s asparagus consumption begins with previous medical diagnoses. If you were diagnosed with gout or have kidney stones as a problem, it might be in your best interest to limit the consumption, or avoid it entirely. Asparagus leads to more uric acid being produced in the body, which is not the best for those consumers who are already diagnosed or prone to kidney/gout issues.

Other side effects concern the consumption of fiber. If not moderated properly, the extra fiber might lead to gastro-intestinal issues, or simply cramps. If you take lithium, asparagus might have concerning interactions with the substance as well.

It is best to approach the asparagus season with caution and moderation, and keep in mind the already existing health complications you may have.
