Protein, fiber, and the next big thing: Omega-3 fatty acids
Keeping the body healthy is still in
Omega-3 is another overlooked component that everyone needs more than they think. It affects cognitive function, heart health, and eventually life span. After protein and fiber, dietitians are predicting a big moment in the next few years for omega-3 fatty acids to be another popular nutrient.
Why is omega-3 so important?
Omega-3 fatty acids are essentially healthy fats that the body needs. They differ from saturated fats which usually block channels for oxygen and hydrogen. Unsaturated fats, or in omega-3s’ case, polyunsaturated fats, have more available slots for oxygen and hydrogen to be able to be beneficial to the body.
Mostly benefitting the brain and the eyes, omega-3s are beneficial to essentially every cell in the body, helping them function as they are intended to function.
As for foods that contain omega-3s the most, seafood takes first place. Though it should still be eaten in moderation, once or twice a week, with a good source of omega-3, the body absorbs enough. Secondary supplements are only advised as a later choice for omega-3s, as whole foods deliver the most useful type of the component.
