Hold on to your feta: Germany to face feta shortage
The beloved cheese might be harder to find soon
Germany is noticing a troublesome pattern in the authentic Greek feta imports lately due to the goat and sheep pox in the feta capital of the world, Greece. The spread of the disease is resulting in imports turning towards products that are anything but the beloved feta.
During ANUGA, one of the world’s biggest food trade fairs held in Cologne last October, participants have noticed a pattern in the Greek stands: Feta has not been made a strong sales point for the upcoming year.
Feta resources will be low in the upcoming months
The biggest Greek product importers of Germany are stating that consumers can expect a price increase before the holiday season, and almost a certain shortage in feta in early 2026. The spread of the disease seems to have farmers concerned as well in Greece, and dairy products of any kind that comes from Greece will see the effects.
The best solution for the time being is to be ready to embrace the higher prices and less quantities of quality feta cheese. The trend seems to point towards feta cheese turning into an almost luxury item. It is also expected for feta alternatives to gain popularity during this time.
