Did you also feel like staying under your duvet forever this morning instead of facing the cold?

When temperatures drop into the double digits below zero, your body needs a little more TLC than usual. But don't worry, this is the perfect excuse for some seriously good soul food. Contrary to popular belief, you only burn significantly more calories in winter if you are actually active outdoors for hours. However, eating regularly is now your best friend against the shivers.

Turning on the internal heater

In particular, proteins from fish, eggs, or pulses act like a small internal heater for your metabolism. A steaming stew is therefore exactly what you need right now. You might be one of those people who skip breakfast, but in the freezing cold, you should reconsider. If you leave the house on an empty stomach, you will freeze much faster.

Energy that lasts

A warm porridge with crunchy nuts gives you the energy you need to master your way through the snow. And if you spice up your tea or soup with ginger or chili, you will immediately feel the cozy warmth from within. It’s better to skip the quick chocolate bar, as it will let your energy levels drop just as fast as it boosted them.

Hydration is key

With all that tea and coffee, please don't forget water, because your cells need fluids to distribute heat optimally. Even if a mulled wine sounds tempting, it is actually counterproductive as it dilates your blood vessels, causing you to lose precious body heat.

Glow through the frost

Your skin will also thank you if you opt for fatty sea fish like salmon more often. The omega-3 fatty acids it contains act like a shield against dry heating air. If you venture outside for sports despite the cold, listen to your gut feeling.

Safe in the snow

As long as you are fit, jogging in layers is no problem, but in extreme sub-zero temperatures, you should take it easy. Wrap yourself in loose shoes and thick mittens so your blood can circulate freely, and enjoy the crisp winter air to the fullest.
