As spring arrives, so does a wave of flu infections – and many people turn to ginger shots as a natural immune booster. But a recent analysis reveals a surprising truth: Many of these products contain little ginger but a shockingly high amount of sugar. Consumer protection groups are now warning about overpriced gimmicks.

More Juice, Less Ginger

Ginger shots sold in supermarkets and drugstores often consist of more than 70% apple or orange juice, with a maximum of just 18% ginger, according to a study by the Consumer Center of Rheinland-Pflaz, Germany. This means the expected natural spiciness of ginger is significantly reduced. Additionally, some products are sweetened with agave syrup or other additives, resulting in sugar levels that can be even higher than those in soft drinks like cola.

High Prices for Tiny Bottles

Beyond the high sugar content, the high prices of ginger shots are also raising concerns. Smaller bottles, typically 60 ml, are often significantly more expensive than larger ones. Consumer advocates report that price differences can be as much as threefold. In some cases, brand-name ginger shots cost up to 2.8 times more than comparable organic store brands.

Homemade Ginger Shots: A Better Alternative

For those who still want to reap the full benefits of ginger, making ginger shots at home is the best option. A simple ginger tea or a homemade shot provides all the desired nutrients without unnecessary sugar – and at a fraction of the cost of most sugary supermarket versions.
