Chocolate goes through the Stiftung Warentest
See how good chocolate you love really is
The German consumer organization, Stiftung Warentest, regularly tests products for their quality, and in late 2025, chocolate bars in the stores also went through their examination committee. Chocolate prices have been rising in general due to harvest being lower than optimal, and Stiftung Warentest carried out their chocolate examination to see if the quality suffered from the condition around store-chocolate or not.
How did chocolate perform in the quality test?
In total, 22 bars of chocolate have been examined. The selection consisted of milk chocolate with two vegan chocolate bars in the mix as well. Milka, Merci, Ritter Sport, Lindt, Lidl’s own brand and more were included in the examinations. The tests are based on taste, appearance, and mouthfeel in addition to pollutants, packaging, and nutritional value.
The “winner” in this round of tests was the Rewe Bio Edel-Vollmilch Kakao 37%, receiving the grade “good”, proving its quality among the rest. The Gold Treasure from Ritter Sport also received a well enough note, especially for its pricing being the best for value at 1.8EUR per 100g.
On the other hand, in one of the vegan chocolates that went through the test, salmonella was detected. Even though it was a low count of the bacteria, it still poses risk for severe infection. The full list of products can be paid for on the official report Stiftung Warentest published.
