After months of extremely high butter prices, in German supermarkets there's finally some relief at the checkout: Butter is getting cheaper again! Which supermarkets are lowering their prices, why the prices are dropping, and whether this trend will continue.

Butter Now Cheaper in Many Supermarkets

Good news for consumers: Several large discount stores and supermarkets have lowered their butter prices. At Lidl and Kaufland, a 250g pack of butter now costs €2.25 instead of €2.39. Aldi, Rewe, Penny, Edeka, Netto, and Norma have also followed suit.

Why Are Butter Prices Dropping?

Just a few months ago, butter was especially expensive due to lower milk production, a lower fat content in raw milk, and rising production costs. Now, market conditions have improved, and prices have been renegotiated.

How Is This Affecting the Market?

Despite rising prices, butter consumption in Germany remained stable. In the last quarter of 2024, household consumption only decreased by 1.3%. The current price cuts could lead to an increase in butter purchases.

Will Butter Stay Permanently Cheaper?

It’s unclear whether prices will continue to drop or rise again soon. Milk prices fluctuate greatly, so experts recommend closely monitoring developments in the coming months. For now, however, consumers can enjoy a noticeable relief at the checkout.
