VW Brings Their Classic Currywurst to Supermarkets
It’s all about the sausage...
...specifically, the famous VW Currywurst. Cars and sausages – how does that go together? Volkswagen has long been closely associated with its signature sausage.
For over 50 years, it’s been a staple on the menu at the VW plant in Wolfsburg – and has gained cult status far beyond that. These days, it’s not just served in the company canteen but also in selected snack bars.
From Factory Cafeteria into the Microwave
Now, VW is taking it one step further: starting in June, the famous Currywurst will be available as a ready-to-eat microwave meal – complete with tomato sauce and fries. The product is being developed by VW’s own subsidiary, Volkswagen Group Services, which has been handling the sausage’s marketing since 2021.
Initially, the ready meal will be sold at Edeka and Netto in northern and eastern Germany. But that’s just the beginning: According to VW, a nationwide rollout is planned. Dirk Schulz, head of the VW butcher shop, is confident the product will soon spread beyond the region.
Familiar Quality, New Packaging
What makes it special: the supermarket version is produced – like the original – directly in Wolfsburg. The sausage recipe dates back to 1973, and the sauce is also made using the company’s time-tested in-house formula.
Originally created for in-house cafeterias, the VW Currywurst has since become the best-selling product of the Wolfsburg-based brand: in 2024, around 8.5 million units were sold in canteens and retail – more than the number of VW-branded cars and vans sold.
Tradition Meets Convenience
What began as a simple factory lunch has grown into a symbol of brand identity and tradition – with its own recipe, millions sold, and now even microwave-ready packaging.
And through it all, the VW Currywurst remains what it has long been – a true classic.
