Not Berlin, not Hamburg: the true Home of Currywurst
The Currywurst mystery is solved
Editorial Assistant at Kitchen Stories
Did you know that the beloved Currywurst wasn't invented in Berlin? The capital's story is now history, because it's official: The iconic dish originated in the Ruhr area, specifically in Duisburg.
Duisburg's Big Secret
For a long time, we all believed that the Currywurst was a post-war invention by Herta Heuwer in Berlin. But two clever authors from Essen have now disproven this. They discovered that a man named Peter Johann Hildebrand, affectionately called Peter Pomm, was already sprinkling curry powder on a sausage with tomato sauce in his snack bar in Duisburg-Marxloh in 1936. That's almost 13 years before the supposed Berlin original! The authors even found evidence, including a bill for curry powder, to prove it.
A Monument for the True Inventor
To honor this milestone in food history, Duisburg has presented Peter Pomm's snack bar with an official plaque. The brass plate on the facade of "Puszettenstube" now makes the secret visible to everyone. And it gets even better: The city has declared Peter Pomm's birthday, September 22, the official "Day of the Currywurst."
Since this revelation, visitors have been coming from everywhere to try the historic Currywurst. Sure, Berliners might still be skeptical, but as people in the Ruhr area have always known: The Currywurst belongs to us – the Pott!
Are you curious enough to try the original in Duisburg?
