Fruit Trade Retail Award 2025: Where to Find the Best Fruit and Vegetables

Whether it’s crisp apples, fresh spinach, or bright red tomatoes – the quality and variety of fruit and vegetables often determine whether we enjoy shopping at a store. Freshness, diversity, and an inviting presentation are key.

This is exactly where the 'Fruchthandel' Magazin Retail Award 2025 comes in: it honors those retailers who particularly impress customers with their offerings.

How the voting worked

More than 7,000 households took part in a representative survey conducted by the market research institute GfK. The results were presented and the awards handed out during the German Fruit & Vegetable Congress (DOGK) in Düsseldorf.
Organized annually by Fruchthandel Magazin and supported by partners such as Fyffes, QS Qualität und Sicherheit GmbH, and SanLucar, the award serves as both a quality seal and direct feedback from consumers.

These retailers came out on top

Four retailers received the coveted awards:
✦ Edeka was named best full-range supermarket
✦ Lidl took first place among discounters
✦ Globus won in the hypermarket category
✦ Alnatura received a special award for its focus on organic products and sustainability.

What was evaluated

Besides freshness and variety, criteria included presentation, cleanliness, clarity, as well as service and advice. Trust in food safety, value for money, and even current trend products that reflect sustainability or high demand also played a role.

A reflection of consumer expectations

The results of the Retail Award highlight which retailers consumers value most.

The recognition is not only a prize for individual stores but also a snapshot of what shoppers today expect from fruit and vegetable departments – and can serve as a guidepost for the industry.
