Have you ever stumbled across the bright colors of a dragonfruit in the supermarket and decided to leave it behind, just because you weren’t quite sure how to prepare it? This will not happen again, because we won’t leave you unprepared!
Dragonfruit is actually a type of cactus and can be compared to a cross between kiwis and pears. They come in a variety of vibrant colors. To make sure that your fruit is ripe, check for an even colored skin tone and that it gives a little when you press it lightly with your thumb. If it’s still too hard, leave it in your fruit basket for a couple of days longer. But be careful that you don’t leave it to get overripe.
To eat it, just halve the fruit and peel off the skin by hand, or scoop out the flesh with a spoon, and cut into bite size pieces. If you’d like to decorate your summer drink with it, cut a wedge or a round slice and put it on the rim.
The fruit tastes great on its own, but is also a good match in smoothies or a fresh fruit salad.
