6 Epic Recipes for Your Game of Thrones Premiere Party

Dinner is coming...

In app

A new Game of Thrones season is starting this week and a good part of our office is already beyond excitement. Although not as popular as in the US, there are more and more viewing parties being thrown in Germany for friends to watch the show together. Are you one of the show’s super fans? Then why not serve an epic spread for your on- and off-screen friends?

You can find plenty of inspiration and recipes in the official cookbook “A Feast of Ice & Fire”. So, if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to attend a feast at Winterfell, or how cook the famous pigeon pie (without living pigeons), then you’ve found the cookbook of your dreams!

It’s written by Game of Thrones super fans Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Sariann Lehrer, who cook recipes from fictive worlds on their food blog “Inn at the Crossroads.” Their cookbook features more that 100 recipes—for each dish, there’s a Medieval and a modern version. In addition, they did some fantastic research to explain Medieval kitchen basics—so there’s a lot to learn here!

Here are 6 dishes, snacks, and drinks that you’ll need for your next Game of Thrones viewing party. All recipes can be found in the official cookbook (and don’t worry, you don’t have to eat a stallion’s heart!).

What snacks and drinks do you like to serve on a TV night? Tell us in the comments or upload a picture of your favorite recipes!

From the Wall

If you have to defend a whole kingdom from wildlings in the freezing cold day and night—you will get hungry. Very hungry. Due to, let’s say, not the perfect conditions, the Nightwatch do what they can—turning everything they find into a warm dish, preserving leftovers for hard times, or just eating things frozen—such as those iced blueberries in sweet cream, known as “Medieval Crème Bastard.”

Not your thing? Then start with: Chocolate cake with preserved winter pears

From the North

Welcome to House Stark from Winterfell (or what’s left of it). If you want to wallow in the good old days, serve a real feast with lots of meat, root vegetables, and baked goods for your friends—they’ll love it.

Or, instead go for: Roasted juice turkey

From the South

A little further South, you’ll find several Houses living close together, like the House Arryn, Tully, Greyjoy, or Tyrell. Due to a quite nice climate and geography, you should serve fresh fruits as dessert—like these poached pears.

Or start with another southern delicacy—seafood: Spicy shrimp over creamy polenta

From King’s Landing

Being the largest port and capital of the Seven Kingdoms, King’s Landing is the melting pot of Game of Thrones, where different people and cultures come together. Two of the most famous dishes are the infamous Pigeon Pie—that you can stuff with whatever you like, and lemon cakes, so loved by Sansa Stark.

For your own twist on Sansa’s favorite, try: Lemon curd cups

From Dorne

The food of Dorne matches the people’s temperament. You may not need to eat grilled snakes, but you could opt for fiery peppers. Since olives, grapes, dates, etc. grow here, Dorne’s kitchen is perfect for an antipasti plate with freshly baked bread at your party.

To get started, try this recipe: Homemade flatbread

From Across the Narrow Sea

To the east of Westeros, there is an endless expanse of land where, amongst others, you’ll find the Dothraki Sea with its exotic kitchen—but as promised, you don’t need to serve a stallion’s heart. Instead let’s toast with Tyroshi Pear Brandy from one of the Free Cities. To Game of Thrones!

Or, you could cheers with: Hot toddy
