Oktoberfest—the world’s largest volksfest—is just around the corner. The festival was first held in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen and has been held every year since then. Oktoberfest beer is one of the most instantly recognizable aspects of the celebration, but food, of course, also plays a large role. In honor of Oktoberfest, we’ve collected 5 of our favorite German menu items from our archive for you:

Soft pretzels and veal sausages

Soft pretzels and veal sausages

Freshly-baked homemade pretzels, paired with sweet mustard and veal sausages. So simple, yet so delicious.

Wheat beer punch

Wheat beer punch

Beer and wine together? Sounds counterintuitive, but the banana and clove flavor of the beer takes to the effervescence of sparkling wine quite well!

German pork roast with sauerkraut

German pork roast with sauerkraut

Pork, slow cooked to perfection in apple juice, white wine, mustard, and an assortment of classic German spices. It melts in your mouth and leaves you longing for more.

Bavarian apple fritters

Bavarian apple fritters

Apples deep-fried in a tantalizing batter of eggs and beer (of course!). You’ll want to enjoy these all autumn long.

Bavarian sausage salad

Bavarian sausage salad

A German classic of thinly sliced cured meats, chives, and pickles—all tossed in a pleasantly tart dressing of white wine vinegar and sweet mustard.
